We’re thrilled to share the story behind the SHIRLEY BETH BOOT, a collaboration with TSC alum Petite Paloma that celebrates both our cherished Lowcountry roots and the powerful women who inspired it all. Named after our founders’ mothers—Shirley and Beth—this boot is a tribute to the love, strength, and wisdom they imparted. In honor of this special moment, Whitney and Cheri are excited to share their favorite quotes and recipes from their moms, giving you a glimpse into the heart of this meaningful creation.
MEET SHIRLEY WISE MORGAN
I have heard my mom say these things throughout my life and you guessed it – now I say them, too!
“There but for the grace of God go I” and “Pretty is as pretty does” – aspiring to go through life showing compassion in your thoughts, words and deeds.
This is my all-time favorite recipe that my great-grandmother and grandmother and my mom made for my brothers and me growing up. It’s so good and such a comfort food and I continued the tradition making it for my kids.
Serve it generously drizzled over hot biscuits and with a large glass of extra cold milk – yum! *If you are up for making homemade biscuits, go for it. If not, use frozen biscuits like me.
Chocolate Gravy and Biscuits Ingredients: 1 cup white sugar 2 T flour 1 T unsweetened cocoa powder 1 1/4 cups milk 1 tablespoon butter
Combine above ingredients, except the butter, in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly to prevent scorching.
Once the mixture starts to boil, turn the heat down and continue stirring for 1 -2 minutes more – watch closely for the thickness of the gravy. Remove from the heat and stir in the butter which will melt and mix in easily.
Split hot biscuits in half and top with the gravy.
MEET MARY ELIZABETH “BETH” SYMONS HARDEN
“Pretty is as pretty does,” was one said a lot around our home too! My mom always encouraged being kind and the Golden Rule of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
This was my grandmother’s pound cake recipe and is beloved and requested by everyone in the family.
Symons Pound Cake
