What’s in Her Bag? Morgan Hutchinson | SHOP BURU
At The Southern C, our demographics span the creative spectrum, from interior designers to product designers, from clothing store owners to bloggers, from PR companies to photographers.
We want to promote this mix by having members give us a lighthearted sneak peek at the tools they not only use in their trade, but in their lives as women who work. #womenatwork #whatsinherbag
MORGAN of SHOP BURU
Recently, #tscsummit past attendee and spring 2016 presenter Morgan Hutchinson opened up her bag of tricks (literally) and talked to us about the tools and products she uses every day as owner of SHOP BURU. This Kentucky belle is living out west and running an e-commerce site with fashion for busy moms.
ARE YOU AN EARLY RISER OR A NIGHT OWL?
Depends on when you ask me. I go through spells of both. My sweet little Olive is not a big fan of sleep—so if she is early to bed, then I am often late to bed and early to rise. It seems the more she sleeps, the less I need!
HOW DO YOU START YOUR DAY?
A few last minute snuggles with Brett (the husband) followed by rise and shine time with Olive. I help get everyone dressed, ready and out the door, and then I focus on myself for a few moments. Once I am dressed and ready, I sip on a salad in a bottle (aka non-sweetened green juice) while I catch up on emails and kick off a full day of BURU.
HOW DO YOU END YOUR DAY?
Brett and I crack a little red wine while Olive eats her dinner and we catch each other up on our individual days. After little one is in bed, we eat our own dinner and typically watch a bit of TV—something mindless like The Grinder or Angie Tribeca (total Airplane humor). We both work so hard. It’s necessary for us to go silly at the end of the day to clear our minds of the endless to do lists that run on repeat.
FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE SOUTH?
Family. Though we are currently living outside of the south, our roots are still there. Visits home mean big gatherings with delicious comfort food and lots of laughs. There is just something about a Southern gathering—the traditions, the recipes, and the sterling silver, china and crystal that grace the tables when everyone comes together.
MOST UNUSUAL ITEM(S) IN YOUR BAG?
Hmm. It’s a toss up between the Boogie Wipes and the Melissa & Doug Color with Water Paint Set. My bag is like a mini Walgreens—part cosmetic counter and part toy aisle.
BEST BUDGET FIND YOU USE EVERYDAY?
I am really loving L’Oreal’s Visible Lift Concealer. It’s sort of like the drug store version of YSL’s Touche Eclat. I buy them in multiples and stash them in a variety of places around the house for quick touchups.
BIGGEST SPLURGE YOU USE EVERYDAY?
I would have to say the biggest splurge I use everyday is a diamond necklace—gift from my sweet husband. I never take it off. I think most people might actually think it’s fake which makes me love it even more. I don’t believe in waiting for the “perfect occasion” to wear something. If I love it, then I wear it!
PRODUCT THAT SAVES YOU THE MOST TIME?
Simple Micellar Cleansing Water. I am terrible about washing my face at night. This one step process is so easy and leaves my skin feeling shower clean after a few quick wipes with a cotton pad. I can even do it while chasing Olive around!
MOST VERSATILE WARDROBE STAPLE?
This may sound a bit odd as the South can be a bit strict when it comes to white after Labor Day—but I am a super fan of white boyfriend jeans. I wear them year round. They’re less expected than traditional denim but just as comfy and can be paired with almost anything! They can also be bleached which I find comes in handy as the mother of a toddler.
WHAT’S IN YOUR BAG?
The actual bag itself is Shinola with an original Donald Robertson painting on it.
Dolce & Gabbana Sunnies for me + Hello Kitty Sunnies for Olive—whatever mama has mini wants!
My Passport: An old habit I suppose from our years in China. That, and I like the idea of being able to jet off at a moment’s notice. I often carry Olive’s and Brett’s with me as well…you know just in case we all of a sudden stop having responsibilities! Ha!
Tissues, Baby wipes & Boogie Wipes: I couldn’t survive one single day without a complete collection of “wiping” products.
Hairspray & Hot pink teasing comb: What can I say? I am a Southern girl. Currently obsessed with all the travel size products of Oribe—texturizing spray included for quick touch-ups.
Lipstick & Gloss: One bold red matte lipstick and one nude gloss. Loving the colors from Tom Ford and Chanel right now.
Concealer: It’s my budget find from above. L’Oreal’s Visible Lift concealer is a great way to brighten your face after a long day. I like to keep it in my bag in case we decide last minute to go out for dinner or an after work drink.
Lotion & Sunscreen: The climate is extremely dry in Salt Lake City so I don’t leave the house without a moisturizer. Nine Naturals Body Balm stick is so convenient and mess free for travel and on-the-go moments. I also don’t go a day without sunscreen. The Beauty Counter 30SPF Stick is an excellent option to stash in your bag—great for kiddos too!
Barbie Band-Aids: As the mom of a 3-year old, I am pretty sure these don’t need an explanation—but on top of boo-boo covers, they also double as last resort stickers!
Perfume: A little Jo Malone in the late afternoon is a great pick me up. It also camouflages playground smell…
Wallet: I have carried this covered in kisses Prada wallet for several years. I think I might cry when it inevitably wears out!
Melissa & Doug Color with Water Paint Set: I don’t like giving Olive the iPhone when we are out to dinner. These paint kits keep Olive busy on the move!
BURU business cards: Don’t leave home without them!
