At The Southern C, our demographics span the creative spectrum, from interior designers to product designers, from clothing store owners to bloggers, from PR companies to photographers.

We want to promote this mix by having members give us a lighthearted sneak peek at the tools they not only use in their trade, but in their lives as women who work.  #womenatwork

Recently, #tscsummit past attendee (X3) Jamie Darling opened up her bag of tricks (literally) and talked to us about the tools and products she uses every day as owner of Darling’s Fine Things in Newport, Arkansas.

ARE YOU AN EARLY RISER OR A NIGHT OWL?

Both.  I hit the hay as early as I can, but sometimes it just isn’t possible.  I wake up around 5 a.m. most days.

HOW DO YOU START YOUR DAY?

I begin each day with a prayer of gratitude and asking God to let others find His light in me.   Then I check my email and social media for my businesses.

HOW DO YOU END YOUR DAY?

I end each day in prayer and check my email and SoCal media, taking notes of what is to be done the next day.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE SOUTH?

Our genuineness, our hospitality, and our resilience.  Our love of food and the part it plays in all the events, happy and sad, is another asset only the Southerner can understand and appreciate.

MOST UNUSUAL ITEM(S) IN YOUR BAG?

Chinese herbs from my acupuncturist and a small bottle of essential oils for balance.

BEST BUDGET FIND YOU USE EVERYDAY?

Baking soda.  Lots of great uses. As toothpaste, dry shampoo, etc.

BIGGEST SPLURGE YOU USE EVERYDAY?

Michael Marcus’ Oxygen Moisturizer.  It’s amazing for difficult skin and works wonders in keeping you moisturized when traveling. (Available at Darling’s Fine Things)

PRODUCT THAT SAVES YOU THE MOST TIME?

My phone (which also costs me the most time) and my O-Venture key ring.  Saves me time digging for my keys in my bag. (Available at Darling’s)

MOST VERSATILE WARDROBE STAPLE?

My Lisette L black blazer.  All-season wear and totally washable.  Perfect for travel and many occasions.  Also, the Abi Ferrin Nikki dress. Washable and wrinkle-free. A must for travel and can be worn five ways.  I own one in several colors, but I never travel without the black one. (Both available at Darling’s)

My small town thinking maybe coming in to play here, but I still carry a checkbook.  I still pay bills with checks.  I no longer have a debit card and haven’t in several years.  The bank stopped reissuing me one for lack of use.  I love a good durable checkbook cover and Jon Hart’s monogrammed leather one is my favorite.  I probably won’t ever have to replace it.  Unfortunately, my phone seems to be attached to my hand in finding order stati for inventory, keeping up with orders on social media and being in touch with my staff when I am out of the store. I always keep a phone charger and a backup charger cell in my bag.

Michael Marcus Glamorous lipstick is a must.  It’s the perfect shade of red.  YSL’s lip stain that doubles as gloss is another must.  Hobo’s metro slide keeps my cards and license handy without the size of a bulky wallet.  I discovered Boulevard’s Lisa clutch that is perfect to run in the grocery store or take to dinner without toting my entire bag.  It’s monogrammed and fits nicely inside my big bag. My Gucci wallet I carry for sentimental reasons.  My mother bought it for me on our last market trip to Dallas while on a detour to Neiman’s.  She passed away four years ago.  Sometimes I walk out of the house without earrings, so I like to keep a pair with me.  My current favorites are a pair of feathers from Tat2 Designs.  My Maui Jim aviator sunglasses – can’t do without a pair of polarized shades.

This year I gave up the nice tailored bag with heavy hardware for a soft-leather fringe Monserat De Lucca bag that is actually lightweight when empty.  What a difference it made to my shoulder.
