The Power That’s Always Up Your Sleeve

the power that's always up your sleeve

Whenever I need a creative boost, a little more self-confidence, or that extra push to explore outside my comfort zone, I ask myself, “What would my Fairy Godmother Coach say/do?”. Fairy Godmother Coach? Let me explain.

The classic fairy tale of Cinderella personifies the way this works. Prince Charming may have been the goal, but what made the magic happen was the Fairy Godmother. When she was involved, Cinderella was at her best. She wasn’t focused on her troubles, she had her eye on the goal. She had hope. She had vision. It was the Fairy Godmother who gave Cinderella the extra help she needed to bring her dream to fruition.

But that’s just a fairy tale, right?

Not entirely. Believe it or not, you also have access to a Fairy Godmother. Or a “Fairy Godmother Coach” as I call it. Better yet, she is on call 24×7. For free.

Spoiler: You are your own Fairy Godmother Coach. And if you think hard, you’ll recall examples of when you made your own magic happen. It’s that voice that:

  • Encourages you to stay calm in stressful moments (OK, stressful days and weeks)
  • Suggests you try new approaches to situations
  • Reminds you of your past accomplishments when your confidence waivers
  • Tells you that things will work out when they seem to be falling apart
  • Helps you deflect those triggers because she knows exactly what they are
  • Holds your hand when you step up to something scary
  • Whispers “slow down” when you’re on a raging rampage
  • Insists that you take exceedingly good care of yourself (others need you to be at your best!)
  • Prompts you to read good books, visit obscure museums and throw interesting parties
  • Hints that maybe you could actually throw away those faded, stretched out undergarments

This special Fairy Godmother Coach never berates you, tells you you’re dumb or incompetent. She never asks “why do you always…?” She doesn’t make Mount Kilimanjaros out of ordinary problems or catastrophize in any way.

Your days always go way better when you check in with your fairy godmother coach.

So don’t make your FGC’s job even more challenging (aka impossible) by criticizing yourself, second-guessing your decisions and endlessly pointing out what you should have done. Or even worse, ignoring her completely.

Ask yourself, what would my FGC say (maybe get a WWFGCS wrist band?) or do in this situation? She is your ultimate advocate and has your best interests at heart more than anyone else.

The only thing is, your FGC speaks softly, so you have to listen carefully. Because only you can access this secret power that is up your sleeve.
