Professional + Stylish
Not too long ago I was working with a style coaching client and she told me a very intriguing story, one that elicited a big ‘ah ha’ moment for both of us…
My client Sara and I sat in my office getting to know one another over a cup of tea. Something I always ask my clients is what’s their ‘style history’ so I have a solid grasp of how they’ve been dressing and why.
She told me all about working in the finance world for the past 20 years and how conservative and male-dominant the industry was and still is.
This I already knew.
But what I didn’t know was how much it had formed and actually impeded her personal style. And not just her style, but the style of so many other women, whether they be professional women wearing suits on a regular basis, or women not in the workforce serving on various nonprofit boards in their community.
Why??
We as humans have an inherent desire to ‘fit in’ and be accepted. This often times shows up through our clothing. In this case, Sara had been toning down the colors, prints, and feminine elements of her wardrobe for the past 20 years to fit in and be accepted by her male coworkers.
The result attributed to her ‘lack of personal style’, and thus personality in her wardrobe. It also made her feel boring, and others often saw her as intimidating.
How did Sara and I tackle this issue once and for all?? In this week’s “Style Secrets with Megan” video I will share with you the 3 ways I helped Sara, and countless other clients, look professional while still staying true to themselves through their wardrobe. Your style action step this week is to incorporate one of these 3 tips into your attire, whether for work, a luncheon or a meeting. I would love to hear how it goes, so don’t hesitate to leave a comment below 🙂
Have a stylish week!
