CREATIVES: Entrepreneurs to Watch – Sarah Almond of Durham, NC
Sarah Almond is a talented Southern maker with her own letterpress and design studio in Durham doing business since 2010. Her custom designs are often printed on her 1953 Original Heidelberg Windmill- how cool is that?
Sarah has an online shop with a variety of oh-so-special cards for all occasions and she also designs for creative couples for their wedding day events through Shed Letterpress‘s sister company, Union Press & Paper.
Let us introduce you to our new friend and fellow entrepreneur Sarah-
Inspiration:
Personally, my family is my biggest inspiration. I’m a third-generation small business owner on my mother’s side, and second-generation on my father’s. It truly runs in the blood with us! Creatively, I’m inspired by the photography of Stephen Shore and Alec Soth, mid-century advertising illustration, classic sign painting, and my grandmother’s vintage cookbooks.
Theme Song:
Do Ya by ELO.
Fave book or author:
A Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin. New York has never seemed so beautiful as in that novel.
Favorite charity:
I love The Scrap Exchange here in Durham, NC. Through their programming and mission of creative reuse, they bring creativity and ingenuity to kids, while also providing amazing material resources to local artists, crafters, and creatives.
#1 skill/attribute needed to be an entrepreneur:
Bravery and Gumption.
Role model:
Elaine Lustig Cohen. The wife of famed designer Alan Lustig, she single-handedly kept their design firm running throughout his illness and eventual passing, and then went on to design all of their projects herself. Her tenacity and talent are amazing!
Favorite social media:
Favorite quote:
“I’m looking for a ‘dare to be great’ situation.” -Lloyd Dobler, Say Anything
Interesting tidbit about you or your business:
When my husband Alec and I were trying to come up with a name for my fledgling letterpress and design studio, we joked that we should just call it “Shed” because, it being the South, I’d most likely end up letterpress printing in the garage or in the backyard. After three years in commercial retail spaces, I finally converted our garage into an awesome home studio – our joke came true! I really do work in a Shed now, and I love it.
