CREATIVES: Entrepreneur to Watch – Artist Marquin Campbell of Greenville, SC

Sep 18 2013

by Cheri Leavy

Of course we like Marquin Campbell, she is a Southern creative hard at work creating, promoting and selling her art and jewelry designs. She is just the talent we look out for to share with the Coterie.

Marquin majored in both Drawing and Painting at the University of Georgia and went on to study Fashion Design at Parsons, The New School for Design in New York City. From New York working in the fashion world, she is now living in Greenville, SC with not one but two businesses: her own art designs (Marquin Designs) and then teaching art to people of all ages (Vino and Van Gogh).

We like her go for it attitude and really who in the South wouldn’t love a gal that creates a Shotgun Shell Collection with her emptied shotgun cases as charms on rose gold linked bracelets?

Inspiration:

Nature, travel, textiles & art

Theme Song:

Florence + The Machine – Shake it Out

Fave book or author:

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger + My Antonia by Willa Cather. I read both of those annually and always find new meaning in each.

Favorite charity:

The Greenville Literacy Association. Everyone should be able to read: it opens up the world.

#1 skill/attribute needed to be an entrepreneur:

Stick-to-it-itiveness. People tend to note the successes an entrepreneur has, but in reality there are lots of things I try that totally flop. I’m open to trying out new things, strategies, and ideas. Some work well (a small percentage, really) and others don’t. I think that attitude is the heart of the entrepreneurial spirit.

Role model:

I really love Marissa Meyer – clearly the girl is passionate about coding, and that passion has lead to an exciting career.

Favorite social media:

Instagram: my businesses are very visual- its the perfect platform.

Favorite quote:

“A merry heart doeth good like medicine.” Proverbs 17:22. This is something my Great-Grandmother used to say to my mom. She has hammered these words into my head, and they are great to meditate on when I am feeling crazy, overwhelmed, or unsure about the task at hand.

Interesting tidbit about you or your business:

I started both Vino & van Gogh and Marquin Designs out of the house: we held painting classes in my dining room, and I made jewelry and painted out of the guest room. I had a gaggle of women drinking wine and painting several nights a week and a bead and paint explosion: my poor husband really was a trooper.
