A proud South Carolina native from the Pee Dee Region, I moved to the metro Atlanta area after graduating from THE university of South Carolina, Clemson University (Go Tigers!) While attending Clemson, I became a member of the oldest African American Sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha and I am still an active member. After receiving both a B.S. and M.S. degree in Economics I started a career in the Financial Services industry.
After years of working in the corporate arena, I started to get the itch to do something more. I wanted to utilize my creative side and knew that my skill in the kitchen, specifically baking, would be the way to go.
My passion for baking was first learned at my maternal grandmother Janie’s knee. She was the quintessential baker of the rural South Carolina community my mother’s family grew up in. I have fond memories of watching her bake in her “seasoned” pans and ask me if I wanted a jelly cake or one with lemon glaze. I started my own baking journey when I was a teenager baking cheesecakes from scratch and almost homemade peach pies. The almost homemade being the fresh South Carolina peaches and the not so homemade being the store bought pie crust ( I had to start somewhere!) After baking pies and cheesecakes, I graduated to making my first from scratch cake, a southern favorite, Red Velvet. Fast forward 20 years and my passion for baking led to the creation of my company, Jem of the South, A Dessert Media Company. What started out as a way to chronicle my dessert making while I worked on opening my bakery (long story), has since morphed into my a fun website, a blogtalk radio show, dessert recipe videos, an E-Book and Dessert Guide series. I’ve gone from baking cakes and pies,to homemade marshmallows, pralines, caramels and more! I never knew making candy would be so much fun! I also never knew baking would open up the doors for me to meet some of the best dessert business owners in the U.S. plus allow me to share my passion for baking with people I would never meet without the wonderful world of social media. What an exciting adventure Jem of the South as become for me and I hope that you stop by and “Discover Something Sweet” with me!<< Find More Team Members
